We've found even more lists that feature Colorado Springs and demonstrate that this is truly a great place to live. We'd also like to tell you about some stuff we think is cool, and some new features on our website. Let's get to it!

SustainLane conducted a study to determine the cities that are safest from natural disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. With recent events such as Hurricane Katrina resulting in tragedy and lost homes and lives for thousands of people, it's a comfort to know that here in the Springs, we're relatively safe from such disasters. According to a recent study released by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University that claims to be the first comprehensive ranking of "economic and personal freedom in the American states," Colorado is ranked just below New Hampshire. The authors of the study ranked the states on about 140 indicators, from income taxation to fireworks laws, from home-schooling rules to drug policy. Read the full story.
While many of us here in the Springs view Manitou as part of our city, it's actually a town all its own. Yahoo! Travel has compiled a list of the 10 Coolest Small Towns in the country, and Manitou Springs has made the cut. According to Yahoo!, "These towns all have fewer than 10,000 people—but they can rival larger cities when it comes to good food, culture, and quality of life." Read the full story.

Manitou's annual Great Fruitcake Toss was also recently featured on the new Discovery Channel show, Wreckreation Nation. Check your local listings or the Discovery Channel website for air dates (episode title: Soapbox Racing).

In case you haven't heard, roller derby is making a comeback. And it's not what you might remember from the '70s. The short skirts and creative names are still around, but today's roller derby has evolved into a legitimate sport that features some of the most talented female athletes in the country. (Check out the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) website for more about roller derby.)
You may not know that Colorado Springs has a roller derby league. Not only that, but they are currently ranked third in the WFTDA's western region, and 15th in country. The Pikes Peak Derby Dames are steadily climbing the ranks in the WFTDA, and are continuously proving themselves a force to be reckoned with in the world of roller derby. Even some of the big dogs (such as Gotham City Roller Derby out of New York, #1 in the nation) want a piece of them and have issued challenges. To check them out for yourself, visit their website at PikesPeakDerbyDames.com and go to one of their bouts.
